IndiaFOSS 2026 | Community booth#
Srihari Thyagarajan
Last year, SciPy India was at IndiaFOSS with the FOSS in Science devroom. This year we came back with a community booth, and spent most of both days behind it, talking to anyone who stopped by about SciPy India and what we’re building towards in December.

Dates: September 26th and 27th, 2026

At the booth#
Malayaja Chutani, Agriya Khetarpal, Aditi Juneja, and I (Srihari) ran the booth. Agriya and I spent Saturday morning running the docs devroom, so we joined the others that afternoon once it wrapped up.
We kept the setup simple: a table, a few hand-drawn signs, and a pile of SciPy India 2026 stickers (all courtesy of Malayaja and Aditi!). The signs covered the basics for anyone walking past, like who the community is for, where it sits between research and open source, and when and where the conference is happening.
They also came in handy mid-conversation, since we could point at whichever one we were talking about.
Conversations#
It was a lot of conversations!!
Most of them started with what SciPy India is these days and ended with SciPy India 2026, which we’re running at IIT Madras in December (workshops on the 19th, the conference on the 20th), with us nudging people to submit a talk or a workshop before the CFP closes.
One question came up more than a few times (we got a lot of practice answering this one): is SciPy India about the SciPy library? Not quite. It shares the name, but the community and the conference are about scientific computing as a whole, in the same spirit as the SciPy conferences elsewhere (SciPy US, EuroSciPy, etc.). Libraries like SciPy are very much part of that, just not all of it.
The weekend also gave us something we rarely get: the whole SciPy India team in one place, with Rahul Poruri dropping by the booth too. Most of our planning happens over calls, so it was good to talk through conference work in person and sort out priorities for the run-up to December!!

Submit a proposal#
If you work on scientific computing, research software, or open source tools for science, we’d love to hear from you. The call for proposals for SciPy India 2026 is open until 19 October 2026, for both talks and workshops. Tickets go live soon, so keep an eye on the conference news page for that and everything else.
Thank you#
Thanks to the FOSS United team and the IndiaFOSS volunteers for the booth space and for running both days so smoothly. And thanks to everyone who stopped by, took a sticker, and stayed to talk.
If you want to stay involved with SciPy India, join our Zulip chat, follow our social channels, and see you in Chennai in December!
